How this comparison was made

Disclosure: VoxStudio publishes this page. We build VoxStudio. This comparison draws on our product documentation, the official MacWhisper website and documentation, and our founder’s Medium article. MacWhisper has not been tested against VoxStudio on the same recording for this comparison. We do not claim a winner on speed or accuracy. ASR models and language selection

MacWhisper gives you a model menu rather than one fixed engine: Whisper from Tiny through Large v3, WhisperKit implementations, distilled models and custom GGML models. You can also choose greedy decoding or beam search and set the beam size. Pro adds NVIDIA Parakeet v2 and v3, plus Qwen3-ASR; Qwen3-ASR requires macOS 26 and an Apple silicon Mac. Some Whisper models are fully available only in Pro. This suits people who want to compare engines and tune how decoding runs; the available choices depend on the edition and Mac.

VoxStudio downloads three on-device speech engines once, then routes by language: Parakeet TDT 0.6B v3 INT8 handles English and 24 other European languages with native timestamps; Qwen3-ASR 1.7B 8-bit handles Chinese (including Cantonese), Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Malay, Hindi, Arabic, Turkish, Filipino, Persian and Macedonian; Whisper Large v3 Turbo 8-bit is the multilingual fallback for other languages. You can set the input language yourself. With auto-detect, VoxLingua107 ECAPA identifies the language first, and Whisper’s language detection provides a second opinion when the route is uncertain. These engines are available in Basic as well as paid editions.

The ASR engines are only part of VoxStudio’s local speech pipeline: Qwen3 Forced Aligner 0.6B supplies word-level timing for caption sync, Silero VAD and FireRedVAD detect speech, and MossFormer2 enhances speech. Those supporting models help prepare and time the transcript; they are not alternative transcription engines.

The apps share model families such as Parakeet and Qwen3-ASR, but not necessarily the same variant or settings. MacWhisper emphasizes choosing and tuning a model, while VoxStudio selects an engine from the input language. Model names alone do not establish which app will transcribe a particular recording better; results vary with language, audio and settings.

Interview transcripts and speaker labels

MacWhisper supports editing and exporting transcripts and subtitles. Its website lists automatic speaker recognition in Pro. VoxStudio can transcribe with local models and display speaker labels and timestamps; its interview guide shares the sample files and the errors observed in testing. In either app, labels are not verified identities. Listen to the source and check names and quotations before publication.

Meetings, sources and assistants

MacWhisper’s direct-download version offers meeting detection and a recording prompt; its documentation identifies automatic meeting recording as beta. VoxStudio offers local meeting recording without adding a bot. For follow-up, VoxStudio can search across transcribed sessions and link answers to source passages. AI answers may use the selected cloud service or your own API; open each source to verify context.

Captions and finished video

If you only need a transcript or subtitle file for another editor, MacWhisper’s focused workflow may fit. If you also want to search a timeline, cut with caption cues, add subtitles or build a voiceover in the same Mac application, VoxStudio offers those steps. Translation and AI-assisted features can use a cloud service or an API provider and may incur separate charges.

Free access and paid plans

MacWhisper lists a free tier and a one-time Pro license for its direct-download Mac app. Its App Store edition has different licensing and features. VoxStudio offers a Mac trial followed by Basic limits, as well as Lifetime and subscription options. Lifetime is Mac app access and software updates; it is not an unlimited cloud plan.
